Set in the lush green Sussex countryside, the Goodwood Estate covers almost 12,000 acres and has been home to the Dukes of Richmond since 1697. It’s now most famous for horse racing and motorsport events, and its three main festivals – the Festival of Speed, the Qatar Goodwood Festival and Goodwood Revival – are major highlights of the summer calendar.
The Burlington Hotel near Goodwood is the ideal place to base yourself if you’re heading to any of the estate’s three flagship events this summer. Read our guide to the Festival of Speed, the Qatar Goodwood Festival and Goodwood Revival – then get in touch to book your stay…
Goodwood Festival of Speed
When: Wednesday 11th – Sunday 14 July 2024
No motorsport festival gets you closer to the gleaming metal and squeal of tyres than the Goodwood Festival of Speed, a four-day celebration of fast cars, motorbikes and legends of racing.
One of the main attractions is the Hillclimb – a stretch of road leading up Goodwood Hill, where cars and bikes test their mettle by roaring to the top. On the last day of the festival, a select few fight it out to see who can complete the fastest run. The current record was set in 2022 by Max Chilton and stands at a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it 39.08 seconds – will anyone beat that this year?
The Supercar Paddock offers unrivalled access to the latest and most advanced racing vehicles. Icons of car design like Lamborghini and Ferrari display their newest, fastest, most powerful models – and you can take a look under the bonnets.
But there’s more to the Festival of Speed than cars. The legendary Red Arrows will perform one of their awe-inspiring aerobatic displays, and tech enthusiasts will love the Future Lab exhibition, which showcases the latest innovations in science and technology.
Qatar Goodwood Festival
When: Tuesday 30th July – Saturday 3rd August 2024
Nestled in the rolling hills of the South Downs National Park, Goodwood is considered one of the most beautiful race courses in the world and the Qatar Goodwood Festival is the highlight of the British flat racing calendar.
Also known as ‘Glorious Goodwood’, the festival offers five days of racing events displaying the sport at its finest. It’s a thrilling atmosphere like no other – the perfect opportunity to dress up, quaff Champagne and have a little flutter.
As well as world-class horse racing, there’s plenty of other entertainment to enjoy. King Edward II once described Glorious Goodwood as “a garden party with racing tacked on” and with live music, an adventure playground and a huge selection of food and drink options on offer, you’ll quickly see why.
Goodwood Revival
When: Friday 6th – Sunday 8th September 2024
The Goodwood Revival is the only event of its kind to take place entirely in a period theme. The Revival doesn’t just feature classic cars and motor racing through the years; it’s also a joyful celebration of vintage fashion. So, if you’ve got an eye for a retro look or simply love any excuse to dress up, you’ll be in your element.
This year, the Revival will honour the life of racing driver and car designer Carroll Shelby. Perhaps most famous for his involvement with the AC Cobra, Shelby Daytona Coupe and the Ford Mustang, Shelby would have turned 100 this year. To celebrate his legacy, there will be a range of iconic cars from his career on display at Goodwood – it’s an unmissable slice of motor racing history.
